Devices
What a device is, how many are allowed, how to remove devices and sign out everywhere — step by step.
In ModiFax a device is not an entry you keep for tidiness' sake but the anchor of trust for your sign-in. Only a registered device stays signed in, only a registered device may take data along for offline work, and only the device list lets you end a specific session you no longer want.
What counts as a device
What counts is the combination of browser and computer. Chrome and Firefox on the same laptop are two devices; the same browser on a workstation and a notebook are two as well.
Registration happens per account. If you work in two accounts, the same browser takes a place in each — on purpose, because the places belong to that account's subscription, not to you.
If you clear the browser data, the private key is gone. On the next start ModiFax therefore asks for registration again. If the server recognises the same computer, it takes over the existing entry instead of using up a second place.
How many devices are allowed
The number of device places comes from the account's subscription and applies per person: 2 with the free package, 20 with a paid package. The device list shows it under each account name, for example “2 / 20 devices”. Accounts without a subscription do not even appear in the device selection.
Opening the devices page
1 Tap the icon at the top left to open the sidebar. On a large screen it is already open — then this step does not apply.
2 Tap your name at the very bottom of the sidebar. Your profile menu opens.
3 Choose Devices in the profile menu. The devices page opens.
What the devices page shows
Devices are grouped by account. Under each account name you see how many places are taken; the browser you are working in carries the label Current.
If the browser you are working in is missing from one of your accounts, that account shows the Register this device button. It gives the browser a place there afterwards.
Removing a device
Remove a device you no longer use — a retired tablet, say, or a computer that got lost. Its place becomes free at once, and the device is signed out — unless it is still registered for another account.
1 Tap ⋮ on the right of the device's row.
2 Choose Remove the device.
3 The confirmation names the device and the account it is removed from. Confirm with Remove — or cancel if you picked the wrong device.
The device has disappeared from the list and the place count is one lower. On the removed device the session ends with its next request; whoever wants to keep working there has to sign in again and register the device anew. If it is still registered for another account, it stays signed in — the confirmation tells you beforehand.
Removing takes effect at once. The session on the device ends even if someone is working on it right now (unless it is still registered for another account). Agree on it first if the device is still used by someone else.
Signing out in this browser
On the entry labelled Current the same menu item reads differently, because it concerns the browser you are sitting at.
1 Open the ⋮ menu of the current device and choose Sign out here. After the confirmation the entry is removed and you are signed out in this browser.
Browser also registered for another account? Then the current entry shows Remove the device instead of Sign out here: the browser leaves only this account, its place and this account's offline data are freed, and you stay signed in. You are signed out only when you remove it from the last account.
Sign out here ≠ Sign out. The normal sign-out in the profile menu only ends the session — the browser stays registered and keeps its place. Sign out here also frees the place.
When all places are taken
If you try to register another device although the subscription has no place left, ModiFax does not simply give up. The dialog shows you the occupied devices of this account and lets you remove one of them; right afterwards the registration is retried automatically.
ModiFax recognises the same computer. If only the browser storage was cleared, the server takes over the existing entry including its device ID. No second entry appears, no place is lost, and existing session bindings stay valid.
Automatic clean-up
Devices whose last proof is older than 60 days are deactivated by a clean-up that runs every six hours. Their sessions end and the place becomes free. A device you use regularly renews this proof on its own — there is nothing for you to do.
Signing out of every device
Sign out of every device ends every session of your user — including the one in this browser. The right move after a password change, for a lost device or when you suspect someone else had access.
Open the devices page as described above.
1 Tap Sign out of every device at the top of the devices page.
2 The confirmation explains what happens: every session ends and the local offline data is deleted. Confirm with Sign out everywhere. You land on the sign-in page and sign in again on each device.
The button ends sessions, it does not delete devices. The registered devices stay and keep occupying their places; you simply sign in on them again. To free a place, remove the device from the list.
