Connect an AI assistant

Connect Claude, ChatGPT and other assistants to your account over MCP.

An AI assistant works with you in your account: it reads projects and proposes changes. The proposals arrive as drafts in the project's inbox, and nothing changes until a person accepts them. The protocol for this is called MCP (Model Context Protocol) — most assistants speak it.

Connecting

There are two ways. If your assistant can ask for a connection itself (Claude, ChatGPT and most newer assistants), you need no key.

Connect with ModiFax

  1. In the assistant, enter only the MCP address: https://<mcp-address>/mcp.
  2. The assistant opens a ModiFax page in your browser. Sign in if you are not signed in yet; if your sign-in was a while ago, you briefly confirm it.
  3. The page shows who is asking and where the answer goes back to. Choose the account, the AI level and the areas — the same choice as for a key.
  4. Connect connects the assistant. Decline only tells it that you declined.

In Claude Code you add the address like this and then run /mcp to sign in:

claude mcp add --transport http modifax https://<mcp-address>/mcp

The connection then appears in your profile under AI & integrations → Your connections, with the assistant's name. There you see its protocol and revoke it; the assistant then loses access within seconds. It renews its access on its own for as long as the connection stands.

An assistant without a connect button: connect it with a key

Not every assistant can sign in by itself. Some programs open no sign-in page but expect two entries in their settings: an address and a key. That applies, for example, to extensions for code editors, automation tools or an agent you built yourself. For them you create a personal key.

If your assistant can connect by itself — like Claude and ChatGPT — you need no key. Then take the way above.

1 Tap your name at the bottom of the sidebar. 2 Open My profile.

3 Choose the AI & integrations section.

4 In the Connect an AI assistant card, tap Connect it with a key at the very bottom. The What does this mean? link next to it leads to this section.

5 Give it a name by which you will recognise the connection later, such as "Claude on my laptop". 6 Choose the AI level. 7 Create key.

What the other entries in the dialog mean:

Accountwith several accounts
The key applies to exactly one account. If you work in several, you choose here which one the assistant works in.
AI levelrequired
Read: the assistant sees what you see in the chosen areas and changes nothing. Read and propose drafts: it may also propose changes; they only count once a person accepts them.
Areaschoice
Only the areas the account's administration has opened to assistants. What you deselect, the assistant does not see.
Valid forlifetime
How long the key works. After that you create a new one.

8 Copy the key — it is shown this one time only. Below it are the MCP address and a ready command.

In the assistant you then enter both: the MCP address as the server's address and the key as the header Authorization: Bearer …. Where exactly that goes is in your assistant's guide — usually under "MCP", "Server" or "Integrations". In Claude Code one command is enough:

claude mcp add --transport http modifax https://<mcp-address>/mcp \
  --header "Authorization: Bearer modi_pat_…"

The connection then appears under Your connections with the name you gave it. There you see its protocol and revoke it; the key then stops working everywhere within seconds.

What the assistant can do

The assistant only sees the tools its connection or key carries — which ones exist is listed under Operations. With the level Read the draft tools are missing. Writing tools do not exist for assistants at all.

The assistant sees pictures itself: media_thumbnail hands it a media item's thumbnail — a storyboard frame, for example — directly as an image, never a storage address.

Recipes

For frequent jobs ModiFax brings ready-made workflows. Your assistant finds them as prompts (in Claude, for example, in the menu under /), and with the plugin as skills too. It is offered a recipe only when its connection carries all the tools the recipe needs.

Accepting proposals

A proposal package appears in the project overview in the AI drafts inbox — with the assistant's name. You accept or discard each draft on its own or all at once. If a record has changed in the meantime, the draft is marked stale instead of overwriting your change.

Limits and safety

  • The assistant acts as you and can never do more than you in the chosen account.
  • It only sees people and finance data if the account's administration has opened those areas and you chose them when creating the key or connecting.
  • What an outside assistant reads goes to its provider. Only connect assistants you trust with that data.
